Dresden, May 22, 2025 – TU Dresden has been awarded a new Cluster of Excellence under Germany’s Excellence Strategy: CARE – Climate-Neutral and Resource-Efficient Construction. It is one of five clusters now funded at TU Dresden from 2026 to 2032, strengthening the university’s role as a leader in sustainability research.
CARE, led jointly with RWTH Aachen, will pioneer new building materials, circular design principles, and digital construction methods to drive the global transition toward climate-neutral, resource-efficient construction. With the building sector responsible for a significant share of worldwide CO₂ emissions, the cluster aims to develop scalable solutions that reduce environmental impact while supporting economic growth and innovation.
“The funding of the CARE Cluster of Excellence is an outstanding signal which recognizes the expertise and state-of-the-art research we have built up at TU Dresden in the field of sustainable construction - in the truest sense of the word,” said Prof. Viktor Mechtcherine, spokesperson of CARE. “Moreover, this funding is a decisive step towards the transition to a climate-neutral construction sector - one of the greatest levers we have for climate protection.”
The funding recognizes the strength of both TU Dresden and RWTH Aachen University in interdisciplinary research and responds directly to today’s urgent challenges of climate change, resource scarcity, and sustainable urban growth.
